Description

This 4-day, 32-hour intensive training program will provide training to become eligible for employment as a Social Services Director designee working in nursing and specialized facilities.  Facilities with over 120 beds must employee a licensed Social Worker.  

This program taken along with the Activity Director 27-hour training program will allow eligibility of employment as an Activity Director and Social Services Director.  Both programs must be completed in full within the same year.  Registration is required in both programs.  

Objectives for Social Services Director class •Express a philosophy of person-centered, long-term care based on individual resident needs, preferences & choices •Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the aging process, including misconceptions, physical changes & psychosocial aspects •Demonstrate knowledge of applicable state & federal regulations •Show understanding of the rights of individuals who reside in long-term care facilities •Demonstrate knowledge of the admission & discharge process •Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of documentation •Demonstrate ability in basic performance skills, such as teamwork, communication skills & working with administrative staff & other disciplines •Discuss issues involved in the management of internal support staff, budgeting, supplies & outside resources •Show understanding of methods of identifying resident interests & needs & the use of assessment in care plan development •Evaluate a care plan for effectiveness •Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the history, philosophy & current need for social services in the long-term care environment •Explain what social services designees do •Prepare for possible facility expectations •Identify who social services designees work with •Fulfill the social services designee's responsibility in documentation •Identify & work with area resources •Prepare for additional "nuts & bolts" issues involved in working as a social services designee.

The social services director shall be qualified by training, or experience, under one of the following: (1) A baccalaureate, from an accredited college or university, in social work or in a human services field including, but not limited to, sociology, special education, rehabilitation, counseling or psychology. (2) Successful completion of the Department approved training course. (3) One year experience in social work or long term care environment, and is enrolled within 180 days of employment, in a course approved by the Department.
